Suggested approaches

This task is suitable for work in pairs or small groups. The supplied PowerPoint presentation should be used to introduce the task, and students should then be asked to work together to design a spreadsheet model to describe the situation set out in the presentation. You could ask groups to present their solutions to the whole class.

Resources/documentation

The following resources are supplied:

- A PowerPoint presentation that can be used to introduce the task to the class.
- A student help sheet that can be used (as required) to provide additional support with using spreadsheets and formulas.
- A spreadsheet providing a worked solution.

Relevant digital technologies

Students will need access to a computer spreadsheet, as well as Internet access if they want to research how the monthly repayment figures are determined.

Possible extensions

In the supplied version, the monthly repayment figure is simply given. Students could explore how this figure was arrived at, in a variety of ways. For example:

- Trial and improvement
- Using an online mortgage calculator
- Using a built-in PMT() function in Excel or other spreadsheets.
