Overview of task

This is a pre-cursor to the Baby boom task and an initial introduction to the Normal distribution.

Strand

Statistics

Prior knowledge

Students need to be familiar with the statistics: median, quartiles, mean, variance and standard deviation. They need to be able to construct a box and whisker diagram/box plot.

Relevance to Core Maths qualifications

- AQA
- C&G
- Eduqas
- Pearson / Edexcel
- OCR

Suggested approaches

This is a whole class task with opportunity for group investigation as it starts with a problem about the length of pregnancy. The data is analysed in a variety of ways leading to an introduction to the Normal distribution.

Resources/documentation

There is a PowerPoint presentation, a spreadsheet with the data and interactive whiteboard resources.

Relevant digital technologies

Students are expected to use the spreadsheet of data to compute the mean, variance and standard deviation.

Possible extensions

Considering how their analysis compares with the given article; researching more data.
